Frankfurt launches climate pilots: health protection through education!
An exciting initiative will begin in Frankfurt am Main in July 2023 to raise awareness of the health consequences of climate change. The city has trained 23 climate pilots who will inform the population about topics such as heat, heavy rain and climate-friendly nutrition. This initiative by the Frankfurt Health Department aims to strengthen the health literacy of citizens and, in particular, to reach vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly and people with previous illnesses. These climate pilots are now in action and offer their support in district and cultural centers, clubs and church communities.
As Rheinmainverlag reports, the climate pilots underwent two months of training, during which they not only gained knowledge about climate change, but also had to learn how to communicate this knowledge in an understandable way. At a festive ceremony they were presented with certificates that certify their qualifications as contact persons for the population and community members.
Why are climate pilots important?
The health risks caused by climate change should not be underestimated. According to a study published in *Health Affairs*, climate change is leading to inequities in the causes and consequences of health problems. It is therefore important that measures are taken to protect and educate the population about these risks. To identify citizens' information needs, an online survey was conducted prior to the training sessions, which provided invaluable insight into the challenges people face.
The climate pilots are not only available to answer questions about health and nutrition, but also carry out preventative work by helping the population to better prepare for extreme weather conditions. A report examining the impact of climate change on health highlights the importance of taking preventive measures to promote resilience in populations.
