Frankfurt Sports Prize 2025: Promoting democracy through sport!
On July 2, 2025, the city of Frankfurt am Main opened the competition for this year's sports award, which will take place for the tenth time under the motto "Sport strengthens democracy". This award highlights the importance of civil society projects that promote and strengthen democracy in a sporting context. The city would like to address not only sports clubs and organizations, but also non-profit projects that are related to sports. We are looking for role models and success stories that can serve as best practice examples, as rheinmainverlag.de reports.
What exactly are you looking for? The initiative is particularly aimed at projects that strengthen the involvement and participation of young people and underrepresented groups in sport. The focus is particularly on measures to combat racism, discrimination and anti-Semitism as well as the promotion of non-violent communication. “Sport is a wonderful medium for bringing people together and living democratic values,” said the jury from the city of Frankfurt, which will evaluate the projects.
Prize money and application
Each project has the chance to win part of the total prize money of 10,000 euros, which can be distributed among several winners. The deadline for submitting applications is August 31st. The award ceremony will take place as part of the Frankfurt Sports Gala on November 22nd, which will create a celebratory atmosphere. The contact person for all questions regarding the application is Sabine Landau from the Sports Office, who can be reached at the email address sabine.landau@stadt-frankfurt.de. If you want to take part, you should hurry up: the application deadline is ending soon!
Nobody can deny that sport in Germany is an important instrument for promoting respect, fairness and diversity. The German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) has taken a clear position on human rights and democracy. However, today we are facing challenges, as DOSB highlights. Anti-democratic currents are worrying and the sports community is facing increasing pressure.
Commitment to democracy
The approximately 87,000 sports clubs in Germany are not only places for sporting activity, but also for democracy education and participation. They offer a platform for people of different origins, faiths, genders and sexual identities to be active together. The DOSB’s “Listen to Your Sport” initiative particularly emphasizes this and places the topic of “sport and democracy” at the center of its campaigns. These promising approaches show how important the role of sport can be as a catalyst for social cohesion.
The Frankfurt Sports Prize 2025 could be a decisive step in making transparent and innovative projects better known and strengthening their effects on society. It is up to the clubs and organizations to apply and use the opportunity to put their valuable work in the area of democracy promotion in the spotlight. With a good hand and a suitable project idea, there is a good chance of winning part of the prize money and thus making a lasting contribution to strengthening democracy in sport.
