Hesse in storm fever: Heat gives way to violent thunderstorms!

Severe thunderstorms and heavy rain are expected in North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse this weekend. The German Weather Service has already increased warning levels, particularly for the region southwest of Cologne, where unpleasant weather is expected on Sunday night. According to FNP, the thunderstorm situation on the evening of June 15th will primarily affect the east of Hesse, while North Rhine-Westphalia will also be hit by heavy rain and squalls.

The forecasts show that temperatures have reached their peak in Bad Vilbel in the previous days with up to 34 degrees. Older people and people in need of care are particularly affected by this heat, as the warnings suggest. From the afternoon onwards, thunderstorms and heavy rain are expected in the western half of Hesse, and the warnings in districts such as Lahn-Dill-Kreis and Gießen are already active. These weather events are accompanied by intense rain - the German Weather Service warns of possible amounts of rain of up to 25 liters per square meter.

Alert levels and weather conditions

Warning level 3 already applies to the North Rhine-Westphalia region, which indicates severe storms. The areas around Cologne, Düren and Euskirchen are particularly affected. Here the rain could even reach up to 40 liters per square meter. The weather will remain humid into the night, and Sunday will bring more showers. According to Ruhr24, gusts of up to 80 km/h and hail cannot be ruled out.

The severe weather center, as described on Unwetterzentrale, provides daily information about current developments. Early warning systems display both long-term forecasts and acute weather warnings so that the population is always prepared. A distinction is made between different warning levels: from yellow advance warnings to red and purple acute warnings for extreme weather conditions.

What lies ahead for us?

With the thunderstorms on Sunday morning, residents have to take action. Heavy rain and stormy gusts will also characterize the afternoon hours, while temperatures will drop to a pleasant 22 to 26 degrees. A comforting thought is that the coming weeks could bring milder weather conditions after this turbulent weekend, with temperatures rising up to 25 degrees in Frankfurt.

Overall, turbulent weather conditions await us in North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse, which not only bring plenty of rain, but also high tension in the form of thunderstorms. It remains to be seen how the weather front will develop and what impact this will have on the affected regions.
