War for the crack center: FDP in the coalition on the abyss!

In Frankfurt, the planned addiction help center at Niddastraße 76 ensures unrest and disputes between the coalition parties. The advance could not only endanger the future of the center, but also the stability of the Roman coalition (Greens, SPD, FDP, volt). The FDP in particular is skeptical and has announced great expectations for its general meeting, where a new party chairman may be elected. Thorsten Lieb, the outgoing district chairman, has already announced his retreat, and Frank Maiwald could follow him, reports the FAZ .

There are heated debates about the decision about the addiction aid center. An urgency application of 22 FDP members demands the end of the coalition if the city council voted for the center on July 3. This could change the political landscape of Frankfurt sustainably, especially since the left has agreed to the project, which would enable the Greens, the SPD and Volt without the FDP. In a previous meeting, the members of the FDP rejected the plan for the crack center, and group leader Yanki Pürsün emphasized that a comprehensive concept for the Bahnhofsviertel is required.

protests and alternative suggestions

While the city government is behind the new center, there is resistance from residents and business people in the Bahnhofsviertel. Over 100 citizens have signed an open letter in which they require to give up the location on Niddastraße and instead to propose a relocation to Mannheimer Strasse. The Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) supports this initiative and warns of a possible damage to the image for the district. FDP district chairman Thorsten Lieb also expresses concerns about the communicative integration of residents and business. The Frankfurter Neue Presse Center should be offered.

For the required talks with residents and traders, social secretary Elke Voitl only wants to begin the building authority after signing a contract and approval. Voitl considers the alternative location unsuitable and emphasizes that help must be offered where the affected people are. The city of Frankfurt insists that the planned location on Niddastraße is necessary to shift drug use from the street and offer those affected the necessary support. The Hessenschau stands out that alternative suggestions for the location have already been checked, but are not considered optimal.

With this complicated topic, an unsolvable conflict between the various interests is shown. While many parties acknowledge the need for an addiction assistance entrance, the views regarding the location are particularly apart in the FDP. The political pressure is increasing, and the coming weeks could be decisive for the future of the crack center and the stability of the coalition in Frankfurt.
