New main entrance in the Rennbahnpark Frankfurt: Green and inviting!
From July 21st, the second construction phase will begin in the Frankfurt Rennbahnpark, which aims to redesign the main entrance. This work, which is being carried out as part of the park's extensive development, is expected to be completed by November 2023. A very ambitious project that not only focuses on aesthetic but also ecological aspects. The new main entrance will be designed as a spacious area with a tree-lined meadow and a large square area in order to increase the visibility of the green area from the nearby street intersection. These measures are a clear step in the right direction to attract more visitors, as entwicklungsstadt.de reports.
In this new area, great importance is placed on climate-conscious and visually appealing design. Sandstone blocks with Corten steel elements, decorated with horse motifs, are used to demarcate the street. Paths made of large-format tread plates lead into the park and to the new square, which will also accommodate one or two food trucks with electricity and water connections. The new sandstone seating with wooden cushions and parasols invite you to linger and the new drinking fountain provides free refreshment.
Enhancing biodiversity
A particularly sustainable aspect of the project is the creation of a butterfly and wild bee meadow at the entrance. This measure is intended not only to promote biodiversity, but also to improve the quality of life in urban areas. The entire planning of the racetrack park began in 2015 with intensive involvement of the population, which shows that the community has a good handle on the needs of its citizens.
Covering an area of around 14 hectares, which opened in September 2022, the park is home to various recreational opportunities, including calisthenics facilities, a playground and open meadows. A direct route connects the park with the city forest, the Elli Lucht Park and the banks of the Main. This creates a network that is intended to increase the quality of life in the surrounding districts and improve connections to these areas, as Frankfurt.de states.
The path to sustainable urban development
The implementation of such projects is part of a larger trend in urban development that is becoming increasingly important. Since the beginning of the 21st century, over 75% of the population in Germany has lived in urban areas, and United Nations forecasts show that this number will continue to rise. Sustainable urban development is therefore essential to meet the needs of the population. According to the Federal Agency for Civic Education, the term “Urban Age” emphasizes the global relevance of urban development processes. The question arises as to how these development processes can be designed sustainably in order to enable future generations to live a good life (bpb).
The challenges are complex and range from the availability of resources to the social acceptability of urban measures. It is crucial that responsible actors incorporate the interests of future generations into planning. Projects like the redesign of the racetrack park are an excellent example of practical solutions that are not only aesthetically appealing, but are also ecologically and socially responsible. After all, caring for the environment and promoting quality of life are issues that affect us all.
