Frankfurt's love locks disappeared: where have the memories gone?
Numerous love locks have been removed in recent months from the popular Eiserne Steg in Frankfurt, a meeting point for couples in love from all over the region. The reason for this was the urgently needed renewal of street lighting, as the city reports. Around 100 locks fell victim to the workers' angle cutters and side cutters, but the good news: the city kept them for six months. You still have the opportunity to reclaim your own locks until January.
So the question is: How many couples have registered? It now turns out that only around ten people took this step. But they don't seem to have been granted a happy return because none of the requested locks could be found. After all, the city estimates that the total weight of these love symbols is around five tons - and they only make up around one percent of the bridge's maximum load, so the statics are not at risk.
A place of connection
Over the years, the Eiserne Steg has developed into a real magnet for newlyweds. Here couples hang up locks to symbolically immortalize their love. “The heart of every lover beats especially here,” you could say. But that's not all: Similar measures to remove love locks have also taken place in other cities in the past, such as in Marburg at the Weidenhäuser Bridge in 2018, according to information from hessenschau.de.
Security standards play an important role, as locks are removed if they endanger security - for example on handrails, stairs or safety-relevant components. This seems to be a wise decision, even if every couple's heart stops for a moment at the sight of empty spaces on the gratings.
The search for the castles
What happens now to the missing castles? While the city waits for now, the big question remains where the missing objects have gone. They are probably hanging somewhere else in the city or are simply no longer to be found. But there is hope for all lovers: information about lost locks can still be submitted until January.
It remains exciting to see whether couples will get their memories back or have to come to terms with the fact that their castles live on in the city's history. According to reports from tagesschau.de and hessenschau.de the residents have so far been rather calm about the loss of their love locks.
