Discover the splendor of the Baroque Fulda Castle – guided tours daily!
In Fulda, the city palace, a real jewel of baroque architecture, has its hands full again. Visitors can explore the “Historical Rooms” here, which offer an exciting insight into the life of absolutism. The impressive exhibition includes the large ballroom, the anterooms and a princely apartment from the first half of the 18th century. There are also some elegant rooms from the 19th century, built in classicism. Anyone looking for special treasures will find them in the exhibitions of famous Fulda and Thuringian porcelain. As osthessen-news reports, a tour of these magnificent rooms takes around 45 minutes and can easily be combined with a one-hour city tour.
The tours take place every day except Mondays at 2:00 p.m., while on weekends and public holidays there are two opportunities: at 10:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Adults pay €9.00 for entry, while schoolchildren, students and reduced-price guests can reduce the price to €7.00. A real deal not to be missed!
Opening times and visits
Fulda City Palace is open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The castle is also open on public holidays, even if they fall on a Monday. However, you should know that viewing of the historical rooms is restricted during wedding ceremonies - usually on Friday and Saturday mornings. The castle remains closed on Christmas Eve, while doors are open to visitors on New Year's Day from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., unless this day falls on a Monday. Information about opening times can be found at rhoentravel.
The baroque palace was built according to plans by the well-known architect Johann Dientzenhofer and was expanded to include two side wings between 1708 and 1714. The order came from Prince Abbot Adalbert von Schleiffras, who was ultimately responsible for the impressive design of the Prince's Hall. These magnificent rooms provide a beautiful insight into the courtly living culture of the 18th century, while the princely apartment from 1730 and its redesign in the Rococo style in the 1750s represent a very special highlight for history lovers.
The architectural significance of the castle
Castles like the one in Fulda are not only impressive buildings, but also valuable contemporary witnesses that tell us a lot about bygone eras. From the 15th century onwards, wealthy citizens began to build castles that served representative purposes. This development has had a strong influence on architecture: from the first Renaissance villas to baroque masterpieces such as the Palace of Versailles, which served as a model for many building projects. The Fulda City Palace also has its place in the rich mosaic of palace architecture that has developed over the centuries, as can be found on Wikipedia).
By combining history, architecture and art, the Fulda City Palace not only offers a cultural treat, but is also a place where time travel is possible - into the opulent world of the nobility and insights into the courtly cultures of the past. So if you have a sense of history or are simply curious, you'll definitely have something to discover here!
