Historic Frauenberg Monastery: Inclusion and spirituality at the top!
The Frauenberg Monastery sits high above the city of Fulda and always attracts numerous visitors with its magnificent baroque church and special history. The past and present meet in this historic place, which is closely linked to the biography of St. Boniface.
In 750, after his long missionary journeys, Saint Boniface withdrew to the Frauenberg and had a small chapel built. Snack on the side: Anyone who visits the monastery church and the adjacent monastery today will not only experience a piece of history, but also the lively work of the Franciscan Order and the Antonius Community Foundation: Together Human. This institution actively promotes inclusion and lives charity in the present.
A place of prayer and meeting
The history of Frauenberg Monastery is rich. As early as 800, Abbot Ratgar had a church and a monastery built there, which were consecrated to the Mother of God in 809. The mountain was called Bischofsberg until the 13th century, before it finally became known as “Frauenberg”. The Franciscans lived in the city of Fulda for around 300 years before they left the monastery during the Reformation around 1550. But the prince abbot of the Benedictine abbey brought the Franciscans back during the Thirty Years' War, not to their old place, but later to the Frauenberg.
The formidable renovation and conversion measures in recent years testify to the ongoing commitment to preserving and continuing to maintain this sacred place. The monastery is now a popular conference center and is easily accessible from all over Germany. Here the brothers have a variety of tasks: be it pastoral care or adult education. The Franciscans also offer support to many people who are looking for support in their faith - be it through confession and counseling or as part of weekend retreats to a “temporary monastery”.
Visits and events
The Frauenberg counts several thousand visitors every year who find their way up the hill to receive the sacrament of reconciliation or simply to find a little peace and reflection. The monastery church is a place of prayer that is often visited by those who pray.
Those interested in learning more about the history of the Franciscans and the current work of the monastery can take part in regular guided tours. These take place every Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at the entrance to the monastery church. Admission costs €9.00 for adults and just €7.00 for schoolchildren, students and the severely disabled.
