New doctoral center in Hesse: Engineers create the future!
Fulda: Newly founded doctoral center for engineering at Hessian universities will promote research and innovation from October 2025.

New doctoral center in Hesse: Engineers create the future!
At a celebratory event today, the cooperation agreement for a new doctoral center was signed, which is intended to take engineering in Hesse to a new level. The RheinMain University of Applied Sciences, the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences, the Fulda University of Applied Sciences and the Technical University of Central Hesse will in future work together as part of the “System-Integrated Engineering” doctoral center. A big step that not only promotes academic exchange, but also opens up new perspectives for engineering graduates. East Hesse News reports that the office of the new center will be located at the RheinMain University of Applied Sciences.
The chairman of the HAW Hessen and president of the Fulda University of Applied Sciences, Prof. Dr. Karim Khakzar, was visibly pleased about the founding of the doctoral center. “It is a milestone for our Hessian universities that finally offers our graduates the opportunity to do a doctorate,” he explained. This is particularly valuable for those interested in the various engineering disciplines such as civil engineering, electrical and information engineering, and mechanical engineering.
Research with vision
The doctoral center has set itself ambitious research priorities. These include, among other things, resource efficiency, sustainable energy provision, medical and physical technology as well as digitalized systems. A future-oriented approach that aims to design future energy networks and improve medical technology.
A central aspect of the new center is strengthened digital and technological sovereignty. From October 1, 2025, member universities will have the right to carry out independent doctoral procedures and award the title of “Doctor of Engineering” (Dr.-Ing.). The doctoral center can thus point to the significant development for the classic engineering disciplines, as it is the first of its kind in Hesse after the introduction of independent doctoral law for Hessian universities.
Embedded in a network
The new doctoral center is not the first cross-university initiative of this kind: there are already other doctoral centers in the areas of applied computer science, social work as well as mobility and logistics. These networks strengthen cooperation between universities and promote the exchange of knowledge across disciplines.
In this sense, one can say that “there is something going on” when it comes to raising engineering in Hesse to an international level. The course has been set and those involved have shown good hands with this step. In the future, we can look forward to seeing what innovative ideas and solutions will emerge from the new doctoral center.
