Rescue workers train for emergencies: ASB exercise in Kassel!
On Saturday, June 28, 2025, a large-scale exercise by the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund (ASB) will take place in Kassel, which will mobilize over 640 emergency services from all over Germany. What awaits the city on this day? The ASB federal exercise 2025 includes realistic scenarios that are intended to prepare emergency services for emergencies.
A total of three different operational scenarios are planned for the exercise day. The biggest scenario is the derailment of a train in Kassel main station, which in a dramatic situation could lead to a mass casualty incident (MANV). In order to be best prepared for such emergencies, those involved such as rescue dog teams, technical units and drone teams will also be on site. The exercise is not only designed for professional forces, but is also supported by over 100 volunteers who are specifically made up as “injured people” in order to make the exercise more realistic. Osthessen News reports that, among other things, water rescue workers and support units will also be part of the event.
Variety of scenarios
In addition to the train accident, there are also fictitious accidents on the agenda. An accident is simulated at the Hessenschanze in which injured and missing people have to be rescued. A boat accident on the Fulda is also being rehearsed, in which the water rescue workers have to do everything they can to help the people affected as quickly as possible. The exercise begins at 10:00 a.m. and ends at 4:00 p.m. The centrally located Kassel Trade Fair serves as a temporary staging area for all emergency services and guests.
The exercise is not only an important training measure for the organizations involved, but also a valuable opportunity to review processes and optimize cooperation in disaster control. The principle of triage plays an important role here in order to categorize injured people according to the urgency of their injuries. Forum Verlag mentions that for a MANV, an overview and coordination are crucial in order to be able to act quickly and effectively.
Prepare for an emergency
Numerous rescue vehicles will be in use in Kassel on the day of the exercise, including some from abroad. In view of the massive exercise, it is advisable for road users to act carefully and make room for the emergency services. A MANV describes when the number of injured exceeds the regular resources, with the aim of providing each individual person with the best possible care. ASB Nordhessen explains that such an exercise takes place every three years and is one of the most important training measures in civil protection.
It is important that everyone involved internalizes both the organization and the freshness of the processes. Regular training and practical exercises are necessary in order to always be ready when it comes to saving people and acting quickly in crisis situations.
