Relax with 90 voices: choir concert in the Giessen City Theater!
Last Saturday a very special choir concert took place in the Great House of the Gießen City Theater. Under the direction of choir director Moritz Laurer, 90 singers performed, including the opera choir of the city theater, the Giessen Concert Association, the Wetzlar Singing Academy and the Giessen Philharmonic Orchestra. Even before the concert started at 7:30 p.m., there was an introduction at 7 p.m., moderated by Laurer, which was intended to introduce the evening in an atmospheric way, followed by a convivial end at the foyer bar that left you wanting more.
The program offered an exciting combination: the first part featured works by Franz Schubert. These songs, represented by “Suleika's First Song”, “Death and the Maiden” and “Group from Tartarus”, address death and captivate the listener. In the second half of the concert, Anton Bruckner's impressive Mass No. 3 in F minor followed, which thrilled the audience with a powerful Kyrie and a lively Gloria. The last 65 minutes of the concert literally kept those present in suspense.
An unforgettable evening
The soloists of the evening, Annika Gerhards, Chiara Bäuml, Jan Petryka and Clarke Ruth, gave their best. What was particularly impressive was the way in which they, together with the choirs, offered an energetic performance that still retained the seriousness of a traditional mass. After the initial reluctance of the audience, which reacted to the first, less energetic part of the concert, the mass developed such power that the applause could no longer stop after the break. Moritz Laurer, who conducted the performance, was visibly relieved and happy about the successful conclusion after the concert.
Director Simone Sterr not only used the stage to ceremoniously end the season, but also said goodbye to two long-time orchestra musicians: Wolfgang Plümacher, who was in the orchestra for 35 years, and Gottfried Köll, who was there for 43 years. Everyone in the city theater wouldn't want to miss their achievements and commitment.
Carrying on a tradition
The Giessen Concert Association has made it its mission to support the Giessen City Theater in its musical design. As a rule, there are two concerts per year in collaboration with the city theater, in which the Wetzlar Singing Academy is also involved. These concerts offer music-loving amateurs the unique opportunity to actively work with a professional symphony orchestra and to showcase their voices in impressive performances. The direction of the rehearsal work is traditionally the responsibility of the choir director of the city theater and falls into the hands of a conductor close to the performance date.
There is good news for everyone who missed the concert: Many of these choir concerts will also be repeated in Wetzlar, so no one has to miss out on the impressive performances.
