On June 30, 2025, Susanne Hofmann's popular photo studio on Seltersweg in Gießen will close. For almost 32 years it was the go-to place for family photography, passport photos and special photo shoots. But as is so often the case these days, circumstances change. The decline in customer frequency and the unsustainable costs forced Susanne Hofmann to take this step.

The photographer, who started her own business in 1992, will continue to work. She does have a special offer: a studio in Hüttenberg is available to her, which she can rent as needed. This means she can continue to offer high-quality portraits and family photos and remain loyal to her customers even if she retires from the seltzer route.

A difficult farewell and new paths

The loss of her husband Bernhard in 2023 is difficult. He was not only an important partner in life, but also a great help in administrative matters and during photo shoots. After his death, a lot changed, and the decision to give up the large area on Seltersweg was not easy. Susanne Hofmann previously rented two floors, but had to give up the second floor, which saved additional costs.

The mobility trend in photography also plays a role. According to fotowissen.eu, 94% of all images taken are now taken with smartphones. The market shares of classic cameras have fallen dramatically. Photography has changed more in the last 15 years than in the previous 100 years. Susanne Hofmann also notices that more and more private individuals are using their cell phones for photos and that orders for professional photographers are declining.

Until the studio closes, the usual opening hours apply: Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For special photo shoots, an appointment must be made by telephone, which can be done by calling 0641 – 72191. After June 21, 2025, customers can pick their orders using a contact form or by email to foto.hofmann@t-online.de. If you want to get to your destination quickly, you should provide your telephone number - a call back will then be made promptly.

The Seltersweg chapter is coming to an end, but Susanne Hofmann remains loyal to photography. Mobile work on site and in the new studio will bring a breath of fresh air into her work. So she will remain active not only for company portraits, but also for other photographic work in the Giessen area. It will be exciting to see how the development of photography continues to influence the industry in the future. The trend toward smartphone photography and AI-based features represents a challenge that needs to be overcome.
