Large protest against AfD youth: Up to 40,000 counter-demonstrators in Giessen!
Things are simmering in Giessen: The new AfD youth “Generation Germany” is set to be founded on November 29th and 30th. The left-wing alliance “Oppose” wants to prevent this step at all costs. How Apollo News Reportedly, the activists plan to block access roads and hold a total of five demonstrations to disrupt the event. The police expect up to 10,000 participants in these protests, while estimates even put up to 40,000 counter-demonstrators. This could be one of the largest police operations in Hesse in recent decades.
The new chairman of the AfD Youth, Jean-Pascal Hohm, is optimistic that the organization wants to appear more disciplined than its predecessor, the Junge Alternative. This dissolved in March and was classified as definitely right-wing extremist by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution. The police have so far no evidence of calls for violence, but are assessing planned sit-ins in individual cases.
Strong alliance for the resistance
The “Resist” alliance brings together various anti-fascist groups, anti-racist organizations and youth organizations from different parties. People are particularly concerned about possible police violence when enforcing resolutions. This is no coincidence: there were already riots on January 11th during a demonstration against the AfD federal party conference in Riesa. With their actions, the counter-demonstrators also want to ensure that fire and rescue services have access and at the same time prevent the founding of the new youth association.
The activists hope that the announced demonstrations will send a strong message against right-wing extremism. The police spokesman emphasized the importance of freedom of assembly and the need to find a balance between the rights of different groups. The pressure on the security forces will probably increase significantly at the weekend, also because the mobilization pulse at the universities is brisk.
New ID card for Mexico?
A completely different topic is currently occupying people in Mexico: the introduction of the biometric Clave Única de Registro de Población (CURP). How El Economista reported, the implementation of this new identification began on October 16, 2023. It is required for a variety of public and private services and contains both personal data and biometric information such as fingerprints and a facial photo.
To apply for biometric CURP, various documents must be presented, including an updated birth certificate and a valid ID. Applications can be submitted via the Renapo website, with the first available dates only after October 23rd. President Claudia Sheinbaum has emphasized that the biometric CURP is optional, while Article 91 Bis of the reformed law defines it as mandatory, which could raise some legal questions.
Despite different topics, both situations are quite explosive and show the population's commitment to their beliefs. Whether in Giessen or Mexico, resistance and the search for identity and relevance are very popular.
