Gießen district invests millions: school and road modernization starts!

A lot is happening in the Gießen district: Investments totaling 34.3 million euros in infrastructure measures are planned for 2026. This is a significant reduction compared to the impressive 47 million euros in the record year 2023. The head of the construction and school department, Christopher Lipp (CDU), emphasizes that an existing renovation backlog must be overcome. In particular, over 20 district-owned sports and gymnasiums are urgently waiting for renovation. One example is the district road between the Giessen and Trohe animal shelter, which will be repaired next year.

A central project is the renovation of the three-field sports hall at the Dietrich Bonhoeffer School in Lich. This hall, which has existed since 1977, is being overhauled at a total cost of 2.2 million euros. Their need for renovation is obvious. In addition to replacing the windows and doors, which currently do not meet fire protection requirements, the parquet floor will also be completely replaced. The hall is indispensable for both school and club sports. Renovations of flat roofs, toilets and changing rooms are also planned by 2027.

Investments in education and sport

In addition to the hall in Lich, other projects are being undertaken to support both school infrastructure and sporting spirit. A new sports hall at the Rainbow School in Holzheim is being funded with over 11 million euros. The technical and energy-related renovation of the sports hall at the comprehensive school in Lollar and the construction of two new buildings at the primary school in Lollar are also on the agenda. The science rooms at the Busecker comprehensive school are also undergoing a 10 million euro renovation.

In addition to these important school and sports projects, extensive road construction projects are also planned. For example, the local thoroughfare in Muschenheim is being renovated with 3.1 million euros, of which 2.35 million euros will be subsidized by the state. The dilapidated district road between the Gießen animal shelter and Trohe will receive 1.74 million euros for repairs, while another road construction project includes the renewal of the bridge over the Äschersbach near Queckborn for almost 600,000 euros in the first half of 2026.

View of the district council

The financial basis for all of these projects will be approved by the district council on December 15, 2025. If everything goes according to plan, the urgent renovations could be carried out in a reasonable time frame in order to clear the renovation backlog in the region. Exciting times lie ahead for school and sports sports in the Giessen district.
