Hesse has 1.35 million foreigners: a colorful melting pot!

In Hesse the population is colorful and diverse. On the occasion of World Population Day, which is celebrated on July 11th, the Hessian State Statistical Office has published some exciting figures. Loud FAZ People from a total of 195 different countries currently live in beautiful Hesse. As of December 31, 2024, the federal state had around 1.35 million foreigners. Compared to ten years ago, this represents a significant increase of 56.7 percent.

A look at the largest groups shows a clear structure. At 166,900, Turkish citizens make up the largest group of foreign residents. This is followed by Ukrainian nationals with 104,900 and Romanians with 82,700 people. Particularly noteworthy is the increase in Ukrainian citizens, whose number has increased from just 11,000 to over 104,000 since 2021. This is mainly due to the war in Ukraine, which highlights the dramatic developments in the region.

Distribution within Hesse

Where do all these people live? A significant amount, more precisely 18.9 percent, of the non-German population has settled in Frankfurt am Main. An impressive 6.9 and 6.7 percent of the foreign population also live in the Offenbach district and the Main-Kinzig district. These numbers come from an evaluation of the Central Register of Foreigners and clearly describe the distribution of the non-German population in Hesse.

It is important to emphasize that the counts include all people without German citizenship. This also includes stateless persons and people with unclear nationality. Germans with a foreign nationality do not fall into this category. Members of the stationing forces as well as diplomatic and consular missions are also not included in the statistics.

A look into the future

The development in Hesse once again underlines the dynamism of society. Multicultural coexistence, as can be observed in Frankfurt and the surrounding area, will certainly also play a role in the coming years. It is all the more worthwhile to take a look at the figures from the Hessian State Statistical Office, which provide important insights into the population structure. The experts necessarily create these on the basis of detailed data from the Central Register of Foreigners, which is now having an ever greater influence on the political and social landscape of Hesse.
