Archeology in Kassel: Secrets of a church from the 15th century!

Today, October 17, 2025, the long-awaited archaeological investigations began at Georg-Stock-Platz in Kassel, which are of crucial importance for the future redesign of the area. The aim is to confirm the remains of a church and a churchyard from the 15th century, in keeping with the urban planning. These investigations are carried out on behalf of the State Office for Monument Preservation and are expected to take two weeks. During this time, targeted exploratory cuts are carried out with an excavator under professional supervision in order to clarify the historical structures underground.

In the future, Georg-Stock-Platz will be redesigned as a multifunctional area with a high quality of stay. The design comes from the working group of “Foundation 5+ Landscape Architects” and “Office Level 4”, which won the urban and open space planning implementation competition. This redesign is intended not only to create a center for Wehlheiden, but also to enable cross-generational use and space for district events. The area was temporarily closed for four years due to suspected unexploded bombs from the Second World War, but was last declared safe in 2019.

Archaeological investigation and its significance

As HNA reports, a ground radar prospection was already carried out before the current work, which did not reveal any clear remains of the church, but did reveal numerous remains of foundations and buildings from the period between 1878 and 1943 indicated. Historical maps are used to determine the exact locations of suspicious structures.

During this time, the city of Kassel also maintained an active dialogue with citizens in order to design the planning taking spatial and social conditions into account. The City of Kassel emphasizes the importance of intensive Participation of residents, which sustainably strengthens urban development and gives everyone the opportunity to actively participate in the changes.

Development of Georg-Stock-Platz

The competition for the redesign of the square was broad and included five works, which were judged by a competent panel of expert judges, including renowned urban planners and landscape architects. The competition management was in the hands of ANP Architektur- und Planungsgesellschaft mbH, and the city of Kassel was responsible as the organizer. These redesign measures are based on an integrative approach that cleverly integrates the existing nature, such as old trees, into the new plans.

Georg-Stock-Platz will not only become the new heart of Wehlheiden, but also a symbol of the successful combination of history and modernity in this lively city. The project surprises and inspires, after all it shows that urban development should always focus on historical roots.
