Drama in Kassel: 26-year-old dies tragically under a tram!

On Friday afternoon, September 22nd, 2025, a tragic accident occurred at the “Am Stern” stop in Kassel that shocked the city. A 26-year-old woman from Kassel was hit by a tram and died from her serious injuries on site. According to the police's initial investigation, the young woman had previously tried to climb over the coupling between two stationary wagons in order to cross the tracks. The tram drove out of town, which caused her to fall under the tram and be dragged for a few meters. The injuries were so serious that the woman died at the scene of the accident.

Eyewitnesses reported the frightening scene that unfolded before their eyes. The tram driver and several witnesses suffered shock after the incident and were cared for. The accident resulted in the accident site being closed until 2:40 p.m., which in turn resulted in restrictions on bus and tram traffic. In order to reconstruct the exact course of the accident, the police called in an expert. At the time of reporting, the identity of the deceased was not yet known as their relatives had not yet been informed. The police are now asking for the help of other witnesses who observed the incident by calling 0561-9100.

A worrying development

This tragic incident is not the first of its kind. There have been similar accidents in the past that raise questions about tram safety. A 59-year-old man died in July 2024 at the “Walther-Schücking-Platz” stop, and an 81-year-old died from his injuries in June 2022 after a similar accident at the “Weserspitze” stop. These incidents show that despite existing safety precautions, people continue to end up in danger when they try to walk between the carriages.

Some local transport companies have already considered technical solutions to prevent such accidents. It remains to be seen whether and when these measures will actually be implemented. The Federal Statistical Office also does not offer any current studies on international accident statistics, but the increased number of accidents in tram traffic is alarming enough that greater awareness and further safety precautions are necessary.

Two years ago, on November 29, 2020, a 48-year-old man in Halle was injured in a similar incident when he was struck between the carriages of a tram while crossing the tracks. Fortunately, he survived the accident, but his life was in danger and he suffered head and leg injuries. Accidents of this type illustrate the associated dangers in local transport.

The city of Kassel and local public transport will do well to rethink safety precautions and perhaps find new ways to ensure the safety of passengers. The loss of a life is tragic and the hope is that such events can be avoided in the future.
