Hot air fryer theft on A7: Police are looking for witnesses!
On Tuesday night, a brazen theft occurred in the Staufenberg motorway parking lot on the A7, near Göttingen. Unknown perpetrators who have made a name for themselves as “tarpaulin slashers” stole almost 100 hot air fryers from a truck trailer. The loot is worth several thousand euros, which should represent a tidy deal for the thieves. The theft happened between Monday evening, 11 p.m., and Tuesday morning, 2:50 a.m., while the sleeping truck driver was unaware of the incident, as HNA reported.
The perpetrators' approach was remarkably bold: they cut open the tarpaulin of the truck trailer with a knife and forcibly opened the rear doors so that the deep fryers could be transported away. A total of six truck trailers in the parking lot were affected, which suggests that the “tarpaulin slashers” were possibly looking for additional stolen goods, as FFH found.
Police are asking for information
The Baunatal motorway police, responsible for the investigation, are calling for help. Witnesses who observed suspicious people or vehicles in the parking lot on the night in question are asked to call 0561 / 9 10 19 20. An outcry of moral courage would be exactly what is needed to put a stop to this criminal scam.
Theft statistics on the rise
This incident is part of a worrying development: According to current statistics, the number of car thefts in Germany rose by almost 20% in 2023 compared to the previous year. Across Germany, 14,585 vehicles with comprehensive insurance were stolen, resulting in economic damage of over 310 million euros, as ADAC reports.
The situation is particularly dramatic in Berlin, where a car disappears every two hours. The city leads the theft rankings with 4,266 stolen cars, followed by Hamburg as the second most dangerous place. The danger is also growing on motorway parking lots, which is reflected in the insidiousness of the tarpaulin slashers.
In view of these developments, it becomes clear how important it is for road users to be vigilant and for the police to act quickly. It remains to be hoped that the perpetrators will be caught soon and the Staufenberg car park will become a safe area again.
