In the coming weeks it will all be about choosing the “Natural Wonder of the Year 2025”. The Heinz Sielmann Foundation and the German Hiking Association have made a fascinating selection of natural beauties that are worth exploring. But which natural wonders are there to choose from? Here is the list of nominees:
- Blautopf in Baden-Württemberg: Eine Karstquelle, die durch ihr intensiv türkisfarbenes Wasser besticht und Teil des Geoparks Schwäbische Alb ist.
- Breitachklamm in Bayern: Eine beeindruckende Felsschlucht in den Allgäuer Alpen, die geologisches Erbe und Naturdenkmal in einem vereint.
- Dreimühlen-Wasserfall in Rheinland-Pfalz: Bekannt als der einzige „wachsender Wasserfall“ Deutschlands, der jährlich um bis zu zehn Zentimeter wächst.
- Externsteine in Nordrhein-Westfalen: Diese Sandsteinformationen sind nicht nur geologisch und historisch bedeutend, sondern bieten auch einem vielfältigen Lebensraum für viele Arten.
- Lange Anna in Schleswig-Holstein: Ein 47 Meter hoher Naturfelsen, der als Brutplatz für Seevögel dient und weithin als Symbol für den Küstenschutz gilt.
- Obersee der Rurtalsperre in Nordrhein-Westfalen: Dieses Gewässer bietet Rückzugsorte für seltene Tiere und ist ein echter Geheimtipp für Naturliebhaber.

Initiative to increase environmental awareness
The election is more than just fun; It is intended to strengthen environmental awareness and emphasize the importance of nature and species protection. As the Sielmann Foundation explains, the natural wonders were selected because of their exceptional beauty, uniqueness or rarity.
