Citizens demand more road safety: road traffic under control!

On July 10, 2025, the traffic situation in Idar-Oberstein caused a stir. A citizens' initiative, initiated because of the increased through traffic, follows the complete closure of Tiefensteiner Straße. Citizens are concerned because this situation leads to numerous problems on the roads. To counteract this, the Idar-Oberstein police station has initiated a series of speed measurements and traffic controls, which will now be carried out over a period of four weeks.

During the first measurement, the high number of speeding violations was noticeable, as many drivers exceeded the maximum permissible speed of 30 km/h. But the second measurement already shows a significant improvement in the traffic situation: speeding violations were only detected in isolated cases. Through these measures, Herborn will also be included in the police station's road traffic monitoring in order to maintain road safety during the ongoing full closure. news.de reports on the current situation.

Community demands more support

The situation in North Rhine-Westphalia is not isolated. More and more cities and municipalities are calling for an expansion of their municipal responsibility and decision-making powers for speed enforcement. Managing director Christof Sommer of the Association of Cities and Municipalities of North Rhine-Westphalia explained during a meeting in Kamen that currently only the police and cities and districts with more than 60,000 inhabitants are authorized to carry out speed checks. Dissatisfaction with this is growing among the population, as many residents have the feeling that their concerns are not being sufficiently taken into account.

Such concerns are repeatedly raised during office hours with mayors. Against this background, the Association of Cities and Municipalities is calling for smaller communities to be more closely involved in traffic monitoring. Particularly noteworthy is the proposal for inter-municipal cooperation, which is already being successfully practiced in other areas of municipal law enforcement. This would also enable medium-sized communities to have an active say in speed control. Kommunen.nrw emphasizes the necessity of these measures in order to increase road safety for all citizens.

One goal remains particularly important: fulfilling “Vision Zero”. Nobody should be injured or even killed in traffic. While those responsible in the communities continue to hope for a positive response from the state government, it remains to be seen how the current traffic situation in Idar-Oberstein and the surrounding area will develop.
