13-year-old at the wheel: father drunk in the passenger seat!
In Maintal, in the Main-Kinzig district, the police registered an alarming incident last weekend. A 13-year-old was behind the wheel of a car while her 34-year-old father sat in the passenger seat. But the situation was not entirely unproblematic - the father had a breath alcohol level of 1.03 per mille. This presented officials with some challenges, reports Borken newspaper.
The police noticed the car because it was driving unsafely. It quickly became clear that neither the teenager nor her father were able to drive the car safely. Luckily, a family friend offered to help and picked them up and the vehicle. Given the circumstances, the 13-year-old and her father were informed of the legal consequences. The responsible youth welfare office and the driving license office were also informed.
Drunk driving – a risky game
Drunk driving is an absolute no-go for drivers under the age of 21. This was particularly underlined by the legal zero blood alcohol limit, which has been in force since August 2007. The Catalog of fines emphasizes that young or inexperienced drivers are more often involved in alcohol-related traffic accidents than average. According to the German Road Safety Council (DVR), around 16,800 people were injured in such accidents in 2014, while 260 people were killed. For the drivers affected, the legal consequences of controls are very serious - a first offense can result in a fine of up to 500 euros and a driving ban of up to a month.
The situation becomes even more critical for new drivers and drivers in their probationary period. They not only have to expect fines, but also an extension of their probationary period and having to attend an advanced seminar if they violate the alcohol ban. Section 24c of the Road Traffic Act clearly states that drinking and driving is completely prohibited for this group - this also applies after the probationary period.
Alcohol-related accidents in Germany – a lasting challenge
The issue of drinking and driving is not just a problem in individual cases. Comprehensive statistics from the Federal Statistical Office show that a significant number of alcohol-related traffic accidents were recorded in Germany from 1995 to 2024. Information about this can be found on the website Statista available and illustrate the scope of this topic. The data, last published on July 9, 2025, shows that the number of alcohol-related accidents continues to come into focus and continues to pose a challenge to road safety.
Cases like this one in Maintal are a serious wake-up call for everyone involved. Road safety should always be the top priority - for the drivers' personal responsibility and the protection of all road users. Let's hope that such incidents become a thing of the past in the future.
