New cycle path in Waechtersbach: Popular connection finally finished after 12 years!
On August 15, 2025, a new walking and cycling network was opened on the Spielberger Platte, connecting the communities of Leisenwald, Waldensberg, Wittgenborn, Streitberg and Spielberg. The opening came after a planning phase that spanned over twelve years and construction was completed in just three months - six weeks earlier than originally planned. The total cost of the project was 1.6 million euros, which represents a significant reduction compared to the initially estimated 2.1 million euros. This is primarily thanks to the commitment of the state of Hesse and the special “City and Country” program, which provided significant financing support. GNZ reports on the efficiency and commitment behind this area.
Mayor Andreas Weiher from the SPD was visibly relieved about the successful completion of the project. He particularly thanked the numerous volunteer supporters who played a central role in this long process. District Administrator Thorsten Stolz, also SPD, emphasized the importance of voluntary work for the region in his speeches.
A network for the region
The newly built cycle path network stretches over almost four kilometers and not only connects the districts, but also promotes connections to the Brachttal districts of Spielberg and Streitberg. This could significantly improve local mobility and encourage many citizens to use cycling as a transportable alternative. Further investments in cycling infrastructure are already in the pipeline, including a connection to the train station and an additional cycle path on Main-Kinzig-Straße.
At the same time, discussions are underway about connecting the new cycle path network to the core town ofwachtersbach, which could further improve the offering for cyclists. The completion of these initiatives shows how important a well-developed infrastructure is for the quality of life and accessibility in the region.
Future developments
In addition to the positive opening of the cycle path network, the development of the infrastructure inwachtersbach remains a central point for politics. With a clear vision in mind, the city plans to further expand the cycle path network to promote attractive and environmentally friendly mobility. This will not only be beneficial for local residents but will also stimulate tourism in the region.
With all of these advances, wachtersbach shows that sustainable mobility solutions not only prove their worth in planning, but can also be actively shaped by committed citizens and those responsible in administration. G.E.H.A. emphasizes the value of engagement and rewards to improve the lives of citizens. The city is on the rise and it will be exciting to see how the situation will develop in the coming years.
In a world that is constantly changing, the factors that will influence mobility in the future are complex. The current efforts in Waechtersbach could lead to similar projects being established in other cities that stimulate dialogue about sustainable transport solutions. Let's look forward to what the future brings!
