Schwalbach natural pool closed: water quality endangers swimming fun!
The well-visited Schwalbach natural pool had to close its swimmers' and non-swimmers' pools again due to non-compliant water quality limits. This decision was made by the health department of the Main-Taunus district because a review showed that current measured values exceed the strict requirements of the Federal Environment Agency. Interestingly, the site itself remains accessible, meaning visitors can use the toddler area and the play and sports areas free of charge while the pools are closed. This is emphasized by FNP.
As the managing director of WMT, Kai-Thorsten Lorenz, explains, the city has already taken preventive measures. After the problems last year, the pools were extensively renovated for the 2025 season. This included renewing the gravel area in the non-swimmer pool and cleaning the natural filter stages to stabilize the water quality. But after just a few hot days, during which the pool was heavily used, problems arose again.
Water quality in focus
The office’s hygiene recommendations are rigorous. It should be noted that water in natural swimming and bathing ponds is not treated with chlorine and therefore requires time to regenerate. Even after closure, the pools must first “rest” before they can be put back into operation. Taunus-Nachrichten emphasizes that water samples are evaluated by the Fresenius Institute. It takes at least three days for the results to be available. The release of the pools will be announced via the city's social media channels.
The city administration has once again reduced the maximum number of visitors to the natural pool this year in order not to exceed limits. This is particularly important to prevent another closure. Since the water samples were recently exceeded, it remains uncertain how long the closure of the main basins will actually last. The hope of an early reopening could be fulfilled next weekend, depending on the results of the next tests.
Despite the temporary closure, the city remains optimistic. The use of the open spaces and the toddler area remains an attraction for families looking to enjoy the summer. Users can still discover the lawn, showers, sanitary facilities and the playground, which alleviates the situation a little. Of course, the whole thing remains under observation and the city will inform citizens regularly.
