Offenbach Abbey Church: rescue operations and exciting events begin!

The abbey church in Offenbach-Hundheim, an impressive monument built in the 12th century, is facing major challenges. The Rheinpfalz reports that the historic building requires constant preservation, and an imaginative circle of friends has already launched various events to ensure that the church is a lively meeting center.

The series of events starts on Thursday, October 30th and will take place in the Protestant parish hall. The aim is to preserve the abbey church not only as a work of art, but also as a place for social interaction and encounters. The abbey church, which belongs to the Protestant parish in the Obere Nahe parish, is considered a valuable art-historical building in the Palatinate and is a popular destination for visitors.

The history of the abbey church

Originally a Benedictine provost church with Marian patronage, the abbey church was founded by Knight Reinfrid von Rüdesheim in 1150. According to Wikipedia The building is a remarkable example of Rhenish late Romanesque and early Gothic architecture. Despite its turbulent history, which included several construction phases and reconstructions, the church is still very popular.

A look at the building history shows that the main apse and the secondary apses were built between around 1225 and the middle of the 13th century. Numerous repairs and reconstructions were necessary to give the abbey church its current appearance. The dilapidated nave was demolished between 1808 and 1810 before it was redesigned between 1892 and 1894 under the direction of district building director Koch.

Visits and guided tours

The abbey church, located at Klosterstrasse 12, is open to visitors daily from 9 a.m. to around 5 p.m. Guided tours can be booked upon request and a donation of 30 euros per tour is requested. The website of the Evangelical Church Community offers further information and contact options. Sexton Daniela Dick has been available to visitors as a contact person since January 2019.

Another concern of the community is the preservation of the historic building. Support is urgently needed and tax-deductible donation receipts will be issued. The account information can also be found on the parish website.

The Abbey Church remains a fascinating testament to history, and with the upcoming Circle of Friends events, it will continue to be revealed in the heart and remain a place for community.
