Frankfurt is investing 2.2 billion euros in new rail transport!
Frankfurt am Main is presenting decisive plans to upgrade its public transport network. On December 5, 2025, the magistrate officially approved the “Overall Rail Transport Plan 2035+”. This ambitious project includes a total of 23 projects with a budget estimated at 2.2 billion euros. Comprehensive improvements to rail transport are planned to bring commuters and students to their destinations efficiently and also to meet the population's shopping preferences. The new bridge over the Main is intended to play a central role by bundling the tram lines from the University Hospital to the Friedensbrücke and thus improving connections to various parts of the city.
The planned projects include the extension of the U5 subway line to Eckenheim and a direct connection to the market square in Bergen. These measures were selected as part of a comprehensive analysis, which ultimately left 23 projects with a positive cost-benefit ratio out of 56 projects examined fr.de reported. Wolfgang Siefert, head of the Green Party's mobility department, sees this plan as the future of Frankfurt's mobility and underlines its fundamental importance for the city's infrastructure.
A win for mobility
The new overall transport plan is not only part of the larger “Mobility Master Plan”, which was adopted in March 2025, but also aims to significantly expand rail-based public transport. The goal is to make 80 percent of all journeys made sustainable by 2035, which represents a significant step compared to 67 percent in 2018. To ensure that Frankfurt is one of the first German cities with a “Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan”, which is required by 2027, low-car zones and cycling axes are also taken into account journal-frankfurt.de analyzed.
The municipality not only wants to increase the attractiveness for pedestrians and cyclists, but also greatly strengthen the position of local public transport and thus reduce dependence on cars. The new tram line will also reach important stations such as the TG Bornheim sports center and Höchst train station, further densifying the network.
A complete package with broad support
The implementation of the plan requires both urban planning for 11 of the 23 projects as well as cooperation with neighboring municipalities. In addition, 75 percent of the projects are eligible for funding under the Municipal Transport Financing Act (GVFG), which makes financing easier. The focus is on intelligent transport networking and the protection of the traffic axis in the city, as the performance of the Mainzer Landstrasse and the harbor tunnel is to be secured in the future. Such measures are important so that Frankfurt does not lose its attractiveness for residents and businesses, while at the same time providing modern and environmentally friendly transport options.
The city council will discuss the new overall transport plan in January 2026, and if approved, the recommended measures can be examined to determine their feasibility. The preparatory work has been done and it remains to be hoped that the measures will soon become reality and ensure a better mobility experience in Frankfurt before the next component of the city's development is completed.
