Dispute over transport projects: Al-Wazir and Simon exchange blows!
Today, November 1st, 2025, a lively debate about the transport infrastructure in Germany took place as part of a panel discussion at the IHK Offenbach. The participants, Tarek Al-Wazir from the Greens and the CDU politician Björn Simon, discussed important topics relating to transport policy under the moderation of Markus Weinbrenner under the motto "Build, plan, brake? Transport policy between expectations and reality".
A central point of the discussion was the demand for a special fund that should be used primarily for the expansion and renovation of the transport infrastructure. Al-Wazir and Simon agreed that this is urgently needed in order to sustainably modernize the transport network and make it fit for the future. However, Al-Wazir sharply criticized the fact that despite the 15 billion euros from the special fund, the transport budget fell by 10 billion euros. This is a serious threat to future mobility, he said.
Demands for the future
The state ministers met just a few days ago at the transport ministers' conference in Straubing. Chaired by Bavaria's Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter, similar topics were discussed there, with both those involved and Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder emphasizing the need to improve the transport infrastructure. Bernreiter called for funds from the special fund to be used primarily for the renovation of traffic routes in order to ensure planning security for companies and planners.
In this context, the expansion of the Offenbach main station, the B486 and the A3 were also discussed, which Simon named as priorities. Al-Wazir agreed with these points and added other important projects such as the Offenbach Cross and the Frankfurt long-distance rail tunnel to make the region more connected.
A look into the digital future
The two politicians were optimistic about the development of electromobility and autonomous driving. Simon expressed his preference for electric cars and believes in self-regulating market development in this area. Al-Wazir, on the other hand, criticized the CDU and its legal challenge to the financing of the climate fund, but also recognized the progress in e-mobility.
The discussion made it clear that there is a lot to be achieved in current transport policy. It was feared that the dismantling of duplicate structures in the administration and the creation of a new ministry for digital affairs and state modernization could play a decisive role in accelerating the process.
Ultimately, the question was also addressed as to how the future challenges in transport and climate policy can be overcome in order to create a sustainable and at the same time efficient transport system. Kirsten Schoder-Steinmüller, President of the IHK Offenbach, emphasized the importance of these discussions for the economic development of the region and the quality of life of its citizens.
The ideas shared during this lively panel discussion are not only relevant to local politics, but could also have far-reaching implications for transportation policy across the country. A feat: The course for tomorrow's mobility is set today!
