Full closure at Offenbacher Kreuz: Longer diversions from November 8th!

Drivers will face a challenge next weekend: From November 8th to 9th, 2025, the Offenbacher Kreuz will be completely closed in a southerly direction. This measure not only affects the A661, but also excludes the entrances and exits between the A661 and the A3. The closure will begin on Saturday at 5 p.m. and will continue until Sunday at 5 p.m. The reason for this measure is the installation of a temporary bridge on the A661 over the A3, which is necessary for future traffic routing in the Offenbacher Kreuz during the asphalting work, reports FNP.

From Friday, November 7th, at 1 a.m., the connecting ramp of the A661 from Darmstadt to the A3 towards Cologne will be closed. This restriction is expected to remain in place until 5 a.m. on Monday, November 10th. Drivers must prepare for large-scale diversions and plan for longer journey times. A complete reconstruction of the Offenbacher Kreuz is currently still in the planning phase, although the renovation of the central crossing structure has been in full swing since the summer.

Background of the road construction measures

The need for such extensive renovation work is no coincidence. The condition of German roads remains worrying. Especially after the collapse of the Carola Bridge in Dresden in 2024, it became clear that there is an urgent need for action. The federal government has therefore decided on a restructuring package of around 500 billion euros, which will, among other things, be used to expand the federal highway network Statista describes. The work includes both motorways and federal highways, and the adjacent infrastructure measures are not neglected either.

In 2024, the federal highway network covered around 13,000 kilometers and represented the most important sector in German civil engineering. Sales in road construction rose to over 14 billion euros, and over 80,000 people were employed in this area. Despite a slight decline in training numbers, the road construction profession remains popular, with around 2,500 trainees in 2024.

Drivers beware!

It is therefore advisable for drivers in and around Cologne to prepare for these closures in good time. Longer commutes to and from work could be the norm this weekend, and those driving should consider alternative routes. Keep yourself well informed so you can plan your trip better and keep waiting times as short as possible. Drivers who receive information about the current condition of the roads on a regular basis, be it on apps or via local news portals, also have a good hand.
