Farewell to the Old Barn”: Homberg’s iconic pub is closing after 14 years
June 27, 2025 will be a bittersweet day for the guests of the “Old Barn” in Homberg (Efze). After 14 years, Michael Schullerbauer is handing over the reigns in his pub, a place that is not only known for its inviting ambience, but also for the special atmosphere that is reminiscent of the 1970s and 1980s. As the HNA reports, Schullerbauer always ran the “Old Barn” with a fine sense of hospitality and humor. This pub served many draft beers and red sausages, and many guests described their time here as carefree hours with friends.
The trained hotel and restaurant clerk took over the pub from the then landlady Anita Bülter after he returned to Homberg from Munich, where he had previously worked in a large hotel chain. “It was my best time,” says Schullerbauer, who now plans to travel more and enjoy life in retirement. The pub has changed little since he took over and retains its original charm. Fortunately, there is already a successor who wants to continue running the “Alte Scheune” from autumn onwards, which reduces concerns about the future fate of this popular restaurant.
Traditional and cozy

It is also worth knowing that pub culture in Germany is deeply rooted in history. Originally, starting in the Middle Ages, pubs were places for business and political discussions. This tradition also lives on in the “Old Barn”, where it is a social meeting place for people of all ages. However, in recent years the pub culture has changed. The trend towards craft beers, like on the facts page held on, has grown in importance as interest in traditional pubs wanes.
A farewell full of memories
With Schullerbauer's departure, Homberg not only loses an innkeeper, but also a place where stories were told and memories were created. His commitment and the charm of the “Old Barn” will live on in the hearts of the regular guests. The pub culture, which connects many people and strengthens communities, has left a major mark here. As the innkeeper himself once said: “It’s never boring here” – and the guests appreciate that. The new operator will now have the challenge of keeping the legacy of the “Old Barn” alive and continuing to be a home for conviviality and good conversation in the heart of Homberg.
