Thieves strike in Vogelsbergkreis: Car stealing is becoming a common practice!

On the night of Wednesday, June 18, 2025, several cars were targeted by thieves in the Schotten districts of Michelbach, Busenborn and Eschenrod. Unknown people got into the vehicles in a way that is still unclear and stole various valuables. What particularly stands out is the incident in Michelbach, where a pocket knife worth around 100 euros was stolen from a Lada. In Busenborn, no matter whether the Mercedes was parked in a carport or the Mini in the driveway, no vehicle was left untouched. In total, the perpetrators stole a wallet and a music box worth around 500 euros and an additional wallet worth around 200 euros from the Mercedes. In Eschenrod, an Audi fell victim to a gang of thieves who stole a wallet worth 250 euros. The East Hesse police therefore strongly advise you to always lock your vehicles, even if you are away for a short time, and not to leave any valuables visible in the car. Anyone who has made suspicious observations can report them to the Lauterbach police station on 06641/971-0 or via the online watchdog.

Current theft numbers and trends

The increase in vehicle thefts is a nationwide problem. The latest figures from the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) show a significant increase in stolen cars, trucks and mobile homes in 2023. An increase of 9% was registered compared to the previous year, which amounts to a total of 15,924 permanently stolen vehicles. This is also reflected in the frequent reports of car thefts in urban areas. Large cities such as Berlin and Hamburg as well as regions near the border in eastern Germany are particularly affected. The increasing number of thefts suggests that the perpetrators are well organized and internationally networked. Modern technologies such as radio link extenders and “Gameboy tools” are often used to outsmart the vehicles’ security systems.

In addition, an analysis of construction equipment thefts reveals another alarming trend. Criminals are increasingly targeting construction equipment, whose high values and global demand for spare parts make thefts attractive. Here too, the statistics show a significant increase. In 2023, economic damage of over 312 million euros was already caused by car theft. Experts recommend considering preventive measures, such as installing GPS tracking systems or mechanical immobilizers.

The loss per theft has also increased and is now more than 21,400 euros, an increase of 6% compared to the previous year. This also has an impact on vehicle insurance, which is increasing in the affected regions. Partially comprehensive and fully comprehensive insurance offer protection in the event of theft, but a deductible usually has to be deducted and the insurance only covers a replacement value.

In view of this development, it becomes clear that not only the police, but also the vehicle owners themselves have to take action to arm themselves against the increasing crime.
