Integration through football: Palm Strikers celebrate successful tournament!
On June 16, 2025, the Eschweger Torwiese was transformed into a vibrant color spectrum of cultures when the Palm Strikers football club hosted its ninth integration tournament. Around 200 people came together to celebrate team spirit and community while promoting intercultural exchange. Given the high temperatures, 50 participants also dared to get their sports badges, which underlined the motivation and commitment of those present. How HNA reports, the tournament was not only an event for sports enthusiasts, but also a platform for integration.
Winning the challenge cup was particularly pleasing for the second team of the intercultural football group from Bad Sooden-Allendorf and the Werraland Lebenswelten team. The old cup was broken the previous year and was generously replaced by Harry Niebeling, the deputy district football manager. The tournament was also a sign of stability and cohesion, as Dr. Philipp Kanzow, the district councilor, and Niebeling correctly emphasized this in their speeches.
A celebration of cultures and community
A total of 25 players from twelve different nations competed, including Eritrea, Albania, Chile, Ecuador, Congo, Iraq and Afghanistan. This diversity made the event so special and impressively showed how sport can connect people. The hip-hop kids from TV Schwebda created a lively atmosphere with their performance during the lunch break and rounded off the festival. A raffle with 550 prizes, donated by Eschweg companies, complemented the program and created additional enthusiasm among the participants.
The importance of such events was also highlighted by Erik Hogreve, the sports coordinator of Werraland Lebenswelten and inclusion officer at the Werra-Meißner sports district. Hogreve warns against overestimating performance in sport, as integration is also about the social environment and encounters. Inclusion succeeds when people live together without discussions, which was also the case with the Palm Strikers.
The role of volunteers
Another heart of the event were the numerous volunteers who ensured that the participants lacked nothing. “Volunteers are the backbone of inclusion work in sport,” says Werraland. It shows how important this support is in order to create sustainable structures for everyone involved. The sports group plans to expand the scope of work and training for volunteers in order to integrate even more people with disabilities into organized sport.
In summary, the Palm Strikers integration tournament is more than just a sporting event. It offers a solid basis for intercultural encounters and actively promotes inclusion. As in the study by bpb recorded, sport impressively shows how important joint activities are for social integration. And with this in mind, you can look forward to the next tournaments and the associated developments!
