Wetterau district council defends itself: No reduction in ICE stops in Friedberg!
In an eventful meeting on October 30, 2025, the Wetterau district council passed a resolution that sends a strong signal against the planned reduction of ICE stops in Friedberg. The plan is to reduce the 13 existing ICE stops to just two, which will come into force with the timetable change on December 14th. CDU parliamentary group leader Sebastian Wysocki emphasizes the need for good local and long-distance transport connections to ensure the future viability of the region. In Friedberg, as the central traffic hub between Frankfurt and Giessen, this is extremely relevant.
The debate in the district council was fueled by the FDP's proposal to completely delete the demands on Deutsche Bahn and the Federal Ministry of Transport. This idea received mixed reactions and was heavily criticized. FDP parliamentary group leader Jörg-Uwe Hahn described the actions of the CDU and SPD as “election campaign noise”. But during a short break in the meeting, the parliamentary groups developed a joint resolution text, which shows that there is agreement on the matter despite internal tensions.
The pressure on Deutsche Bahn
The resolution that has now been passed urgently calls on Deutsche Bahn to refrain from the planned timetable changes. In addition, District Administrator Jan Weckler should work on the RMV supervisory board to maintain the connections. This unanimous vote speaks loudly and illustrates the district council's determination to ensure the mobility of citizens in the Wetterau. District council chairman Armin Häuser described the resolution as a strong step for the region.
The Greens fully support the resolution and are also committed to maintaining the ICE stops. They emphasize that well-developed transport connections are crucial for the development of the region. This shows that mobility is not just a technical issue, but also a question of quality of life for residents.
What will become of Friedberg?
The developments surrounding rail connections in Friedberg reflect the current challenges of transport policy. While the AfD submitted an emergency motion on traffic safety at a pedestrian traffic light in Glauburg-Stockheim, which was rejected by a large majority, the discussions in the district council show the complex internal tensions between the factions. The rejection of the request suggests that other issues, such as reducing ICE stops, are currently in the foreground.
Overall, it remains to be seen how Deutsche Bahn will react to the district council's resolution. The citizens of Wetterau are looking forward to the developments and are hoping for a positive turn in transport policy.
