Protests against AfD Christmas party: Mayor defends rentals!
There's a lot going on in Florstadt at the moment. The community center, attractive and conveniently located, recently served as the venue for a controversial AfD Christmas party. This event not only heated up tempers, but also raised questions for the city administration. Mayor Daniel Imbescheid defended the use of the community center with legal arguments, while at the same time citizens protested against the celebration with a vigil. According to [fnp.de].
The situation is all the more astonishing because in July 2025 the city council unanimously decided to close the large halls of the community centers for party political events. Mayor Imbescheid referred to the Equal Treatment Act to explain that all parties must be treated equally in the interest of political neutrality. The AfD had previously been active in the community center several times since 2023 and had held various events there, which is why the discussion about the use of the rooms began in September 2023, when the Wetterau district association rented the large hall for an election campaign event. A new passage in the rules now prohibits the use of the large halls by political parties, while small side rooms remain accessible for political events.
Consequences of the change in the statutes
These legislative measures are explicitly aimed at making it more difficult for the AfD to hold large events in municipal buildings. Since the adjustment of the usage guidelines, which came into force in May 2025, there has been a significant decrease in inquiries from the AfD. Until the statutes were changed, the community center was a popular place for events of all kinds. But now, as fr.de confirms, there will no longer be any major AfD events in the community centers. The mayor also stated that rescission of rental agreements would not be legally enforceable, which ended the discussion about possible extraordinary terminations. The Christmas party on November 29th was the last big AfD event that took place before the new rules came into force.
Despite the changes to the statutes, the AfD still has the opportunity to rent the small halls of the community centers for meetings with 40 to 80 people. It remains to be seen how the political landscape in Florstadt will develop, especially with regard to the continued political neutrality and the reactions of citizens to the activities of the AfD.
