A66 in Wiesbaden: New Salzbachtal Bridge opens on August 1st!
Something is happening again in Wiesbaden - the second new partial bridge of the Salzbachtal crossing on the A66 will be opened to traffic on August 1st. This means that the central traffic artery in the Rhine-Main area, which connects Wiesbaden with the Frankfurt am Main metropolitan region, will receive an urgently needed improvement. The old Salzbachtal bridge, about 300 meters long, was blown up in November 2021 after it was closed due to falling concrete chunks. This is described by hessenschau.de.
The first new partial crossing, the south bridge, was put into operation at the end of 2023 and will have two narrowed lanes in both directions.
Interestingly, the date for the commissioning of the north bridge was strategically set for a Friday evening during the Hesse summer school holidays. This is intended to avoid traffic jams when traffic is opened. Before the release, speeches by Hesse's Deputy Prime Minister Kaweh Mansoori and Wiesbaden's Mayor Gert-Uwe Mende are planned, as merkurist.de reports.
The challenges during construction
Construction work is on schedule and this progress is encouraging. On June 11, the final move of the North Bridge was successfully completed, marking the completion of the fourth and final move. The last bridge section weighs an impressive 3,500 tons and was moved 70 meters to its final position. The construction work included the installation of pillars, the sealing of the concrete road slab and the installation of railings and protective devices. The Salzbachtal Bridge has been completely closed since June 18, 2021 due to severe damage and was blown up on November 6, 2021. Since then it has been rebuilt.
A lot of money, around 225 million euros, went into the replacement construction of the Salzbachtal Bridge. This shows how important the new bridge is for the region. On average, around 80,000 vehicles travel daily on this crucial section of the A66, which stretches between the Rheingau-Taunus district, Wiesbaden, Mainz, Frankfurt and the Main-Taunus district. The dimensions and noise protection of the new bridges have already been designed for a later six-lane expansion of the A66, which represents a long-term goal.
Outlook for traffic opening
After traffic is opened, drivers must expect minor restrictions in the first few weeks due to remaining work. Nevertheless, the population will certainly breathe a sigh of relief when the North Bridge is officially opened on August 1st and the traffic situation in Wiesbaden stabilizes again. After all, the closed bridge was a major obstacle in the everyday lives of many commuters and drivers who use the A66 every day. Now things are looking up again!
