Alcohol ban at German Unity Square ended – new life returns!

At the German Unity Square in Wiesbaden there is once again a relaxed approach to alcohol - the previously valid ban on alcohol has been lifted since June 30, 2025. As reported by Wiesbaden Aktuell, the general decree that regulated the ban was not extended. The reason for this is that the city's legal office came to the conclusion in June that the legal requirements for continuation were no longer met.

The assessment by the state and city police states that there is currently no specific risk situation that would justify an alcohol ban. According to the previous regulation, which was based on Section 35 of the Administrative Procedure Act, the legal basis was Section 11 of the Hessian Law on Public Safety and Order. This requires a specific threat to public safety or order. However, these conditions are no longer met.

Monitoring the situation

As highlighted in the press department of the state capital of Wiesbaden, the police, public order office and the Prevention Council will continue to keep an eye on the situation at the German Unity Square. The effects of lifting the alcohol ban should be analyzed in detail in order to be able to react appropriately to possible developments.

However, in other cities, such as Bitburg, a stricter approach to alcohol consumption in public areas is practiced. From now on, there is a ban on alcohol in certain places such as the bus station and the orphanage park until March 31, 2026. A ban on the consumption and carrying of alcohol is imposed there from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and similar restrictions can also be observed in other areas in order to combat the increase in disruptions and threats to public safety, as described in detail in the public announcement from Bitburg.

How the situation at the German Unity Square in Wiesbaden will develop remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: the decision to lift the alcohol ban could contribute to a more relaxed atmosphere in this popular part of town, while authorities remain ready to intervene if necessary.
