Art icon Louise Nevelson: pioneer of vision at the Wiesbaden Museum!

What artistic excitement in Wiesbaden! Today, November 9, 2025, the exhibition “The Poetry of Search” with works by Louise Nevelson opened at Wiesbaden Museum opened. This show is a tribute to one of the most important American sculptors, who lived from 1899 to 1988 and whose works had a lasting impact on the art scene.

Nevelson, who was the only woman to appear in the Museum of Modern Art's 1959 exhibition "Sixteen Americans," knew how to create something unique from everyday materials. Treating ordinary activities as part of her creative process, she became known for her large-scale, monochrome sculptures that shine in black, white or gold. The current exhibition shows over 60 collages and 12 large works, including impressive reliefs and sculptures, which are divided into four different areas.

A look at the works

The presentation in the museum impresses with an exciting selection. The pieces on display include not only large assemblages, but also over 50 collages from different periods of Nevelson's work, which engage in a stimulating dialogue with one another. Her skillful use of colors and shapes makes her works a joy for the eye and thought-provoking.

What’s special about this exhibition? It also marks the 35th anniversary since Nevelson's last presentation in Wiesbaden, which was part of the Women Artists of the 20th Century show. This shows once again that the importance of women in art, who have often been overlooked or underrepresented, is finally being recognized.

Women in art

The influence of artists like Nevelson is becoming increasingly important in the broader discussion about women in art. Historically, artistic training for women has long been severely restricted, and access to academies was scarce at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Women often had to find alternative ways to develop and exhibit their art. Despite all the obstacles, women have made great strides in the art world. Linda Nochlin also noted in 2007 that women are no longer the exception but part of the rule in the art world.

The exhibition runs until March 15, 2026 and will be followed by a Nevelson retrospective at the Center Pompidou Metz, which opens at the end of January 2026. The Wiesbaden Museum therefore remains an important place to celebrate Nevelson's impressive oeuvre and to further promote the visibility of women in art.

The opening of the exhibition will certainly leave a lasting impression on visitors and help advance the discussion about the fair distribution of attention and resources in the art world. Nevelson's creative power and reference to everyday materials remind us that art can be found everywhere, often where you least expect it.
