Alligator in Vechta! City hunts dangerous reptile in the pond!

An unusual incident is causing a stir in Vechta: an illegally kept reptile was discovered in a pond. A spokesman for the city administration informs that there is an alligator about 80 centimeters long in the rain retention basin on Schweriner Strasse. The alligator is classified as a juvenile, making it a rare sight in the region. The Vechta police were made aware of a private cell phone video showing the animal on Friday evening. The pond was immediately cordoned off to avoid possible dangers. But the search for the alligator has so far been difficult.

On Saturday, the police combed the 2.5 hectare area twice with a drone, but without success. The city administration is now trying to catch the alligator with a live trap. If this fails, the water could be drained from the retention basin. Fortunately, according to a city spokesman, there is no immediate threat to people or pets from the reptile.

Illegal animal husbandry in focus

The incident in Vechta sheds light on the general situation in the region, which is characterized by illegal animal husbandry. According to a report by the taz insufficient authorization. In the wake of swine fever, the Weser-Ems district government instructed farmers to document their stock of fattening farms. So far, the Vechta district in particular has failed in this evaluation in terms of speed.

Overall, many companies will still be under scrutiny until the end of June. About two of them are checked every day, but the investigations could last up to six years. The problems are not new: many business owners have a building permit, but have continuously increased the number of animals and thus violated legal requirements. For businesses with more than 700 pigs, additional approval is required under the Federal Immission Control Act - but many farmers have failed to do so. In serious cases, such businesses are threatened with closure.

Legal framework for animal husbandry

In order to combat such abuses, new regulations are being discussed. The KTBL is organizing a conference on the current legal framework for animal husbandry on June 4, 2025 in Hildesheim and on June 25, 2025 in Ulm. Among other things, the new industrial emissions directive and the amendment to the Federal Immission Control Act will be discussed. The objective is clear: the negative environmental impacts of animal husbandry should be limited and the approval process should be accelerated.

It remains to be seen whether the alligator capture operation in Vechta will be successful and what impact the current discussions on animal husbandry will have on the region. The population will certainly follow the developments with excitement in the coming weeks.
