Ammerland Clinic: 233 million euros for modern health center!
There is a sense of optimism in Westerstede: construction of the new clinical center at the Ammerland Clinic has officially begun. The groundbreaking ceremony took place in August 2023, signed by Lower Saxony's Health Minister Dr. Andreas Philippi. Completion of the new building, which is estimated at an impressive 233 million euros, is targeted for 2029. According to reports, 130 million euros of this come from the state of Lower Saxony kma online.
With a planned area of around 11,200 square meters, the project aims to significantly improve the infrastructure. A modern hospital is planned with an emergency center, a central operating room with 13 operating rooms and an intensive care unit with 42 beds. Radiology and a helipad are also part of the project. With a total of 176 beds in single and double rooms, the Ammerland Clinic will continue to function as a primary care provider with 385 beds, treating around 80,000 patients annually.
Cooperation and transformation
There has been a close collaboration with the Bundeswehr Hospital in Westerstede since 2008, which extends to areas such as the emergency center, central operating room, anesthesia and surgical intensive care medicine. The new building will contain 9 operating theaters for the Ammerland Clinic and 4 for the Bundeswehr Hospital. After the new center is put into operation, extensive conversion and renovation work will follow on the existing buildings in order to bring them up to date.
The need for such investments must also be seen against the background of current developments in hospital construction. Loud PwC German hospitals will have to invest significantly in their buildings and infrastructure in the coming years in order to remain competitive. There is a significant need for modernization, further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and rising operating costs.
A sustainable approach
The topic of sustainability is particularly emphasized in this new building. The hospital will be designed as a “Green Hospital” with a clear focus on energy self-sufficiency. Environmentally friendly measures such as green solar roofs and a partially green facade are planned. In addition, the use of LED lighting and photovoltaics as well as a wooden hybrid construction are planned.
The master planning for the new building started in 2019 and is the result of intensive weak point analyzes and user voting, which determined that the existing structures were outdated. These redesigns are necessary because the need for modern, flexible spaces is greater than ever. In recent years it has become clear that existing floor plans can often no longer meet the requirements of modern patient care, which, among other things, also leads to an increase in operating costs.
In summary, it can be said that the new building of the Ammerland Clinic not only represents a big step for medical care in the region, but is also a sign of future-oriented and sustainable thinking in the healthcare system. The first steps have been taken, and the people of Westerstede can be excited to see how their hospital will develop in the coming years.
