Garden paradise opens its doors: Visit the best gardens in the northwest!

At the weekend, a colorful variety of private gardens will once again be opening up to interested visitors in northwest Lower Saxony. Since 1984, the “In Neighbors Garden” foundation has been committed to ensuring that the public has an insight into the creative work and natural design of the gardens. From Apen to Jever and Oldenburg to Lingen (Ems) – numerous garden owners leave their doors open to curious garden lovers. A total of around 120 gardens along the beautiful hiking trail between Wilhelmshaven and Slochteren (Netherlands) are a real highlight.

You can discover the most beautiful type of garden design, especially in Hesel, where five private gardens await visitors on Sunday. In front of the properties, the gardens are already marked by creatively decorated bicycles. There are natural gardens, fruit and vegetable gardens, and even a barefoot path to explore. And the best thing about it: A cozy garden flea market run by the village community awaits guests on Amerikaplatz.

Insights into garden diversity

The purpose of this campaign is not just to exchange ideas between gardening enthusiasts; It also takes place against the background of the ongoing drought, which is challenging garden owners, sports clubs and farmers. These open gardens are also a sign of solidarity that strengthens hope for a better time. The commitment to the natural design of the gardens and the efforts to preserve biodiversity are essential.

Another important point is the NABU “Insect Summer” campaign, which this year takes place from June 3rd to 12th and then again from August 5th to 14th. This joint campaign by NABU, LBV and naturgucker.de gives participants the opportunity to observe insects and thereby develop a better understanding of our environment. Given the requirement to go to a place such as a garden or meadow on a sunny and windless day, anyone can count insects for an hour and enter the results online. This not only promotes awareness of nature, but is also a valuable contribution to its protection.

Biodiversity projects

In recent years, the “Gardens for Biodiversity” project has also been established, which advocates the resource-saving design of gardens and green spaces. We work closely with various partners. An annual garden competition addresses biodiversity concerns, with particular emphasis in recent years on different garden forms: from courtyards to urban gardens and new green spaces.

The project runs until the end of 2025 and supports municipal institutions and businesses in the sustainable redesign of green spaces. Workshops, lectures and tours raise awareness of these topics. This not only promotes the beauty of nature, but also lays an important building block against climate change.

So if you're looking for an inspiring look at the neighborhood, then you shouldn't miss this weekend's garden event. This campaign is an excellent opportunity to strengthen your connection to nature and perhaps also receive one or two gardening tips from the dedicated hosts.
