Stone thrown from car: cyclist seriously injured in Aurich!
A disturbing incident occurred on July 4, 2025 in Aurich when a 40-year-old cyclist was suddenly hit by a stone thrown from a passing car. The cycle path on Schoolpad in the direction of Egelser Straße, on which the incident occurred, became the scene of a dangerous attack. According to the police, the passenger of the vehicle is suspected of being the perpetrator, but the car was able to flee towards Raiffeisenstrasse. In this context, the Aurich police are asking witnesses to call (04941) 606215 to obtain further clarity about the incident.
This is not the only worrying incident in Aurich recently. On May 26, 2025, there was a fatal accident in which a 16-year-old cyclist who wanted to cross the road was hit by a truck. The 46-year-old truck driver had overlooked the red light at a traffic light. After the tragic collision, the teenager was taken to a clinic for life-threatening injuries, where he later died. The truck driver remained uninjured while police investigated and Von Jhering Street was closed while the footage was taken.
The dangers for cyclists
These tragic incidents highlight the risks cyclists face on the road. Insurers' accident research (UDV) estimates that technical turning assistants for trucks could save the lives of 28 cyclists and prevent around 100 serious injuries every year. Particularly in urban areas, turning situations pose a major risk of accidents, especially for cyclists and pedestrians. Personal responsibility also plays a role: a significant proportion of accidents are often caused by cyclists themselves because traffic rules are not followed.
The discussion about measures to avoid the “blind spot” remains controversial, but it is clear that defensiveness in road traffic is urgently needed, especially for children and young people. Many examples from accident statistics illustrate the dangers on the roads, from cyclists running red lights to tragic collisions with trucks.
Overall, it shows that both the safety precautions in vehicles and the behavior of cyclists in traffic are crucial for reducing such incidents. It remains to be hoped that through increased education and technical advances, safety for cyclists can be sustainably improved.
