Varel is aiming for a derby win against Aurich – emotions are running high!

On Saturday at 7:30 p.m. the eagerly awaited derby between HSG Varel and OHV Aurich will take place in the Manfred Schmidt sports hall in Altjührden. The game has been completely sold out for weeks, and around 850 spectators can look forward to an intense duel. For Christoph Deters, the HSG's sporting director, this game is a real highlight of the season, while coach Arek Blacha describes the encounter as a "bonus game" that the team wants to master with a lot of effort.

The derby is not only explosive in terms of sport, but also emotionally affects many people. It's the first competitive duel in a long time and the anticipation is great. Looking back on the preparation, Varel was able to win 25:24 in a friendly against Aurich, which could provide additional impetus.

The shape of the teams

After a thrilling win against GWD Minden II (37:33), Varel is optimistic about the game. The players have to be careful not to over-motivate themselves, as Blacha says: “I have to slow down my team rather than get them excited.” Meanwhile, Aurich recently lost against the ASV Hamm-Westfalen team 29:35, which increases the pressure on them. Nevertheless, Aurich remains in fourth place in the table with 14:4 points and has set itself ambitious goals: winning the title in the North-West relay is at the top of the agenda.

Blacha highlights Aurich's qualities: The opponent plays fast handball and is strong in one-on-one situations. Aurich has also strengthened itself with a number of new signings who have both first and second division experience. These include Alon Oberman and goalkeeper Pal Merkovszki, who even plays for the US national team. Also worthy of mention is Aurich's best goalscorer, Vincent Kreiselmaier's student Nerdin Vunic, who has already scored 38 goals this season.

The look into the future

HSG Varel not only wants to win the game, but also wants to offer the fans an unforgettable event. Blacha hopes that the spectators enjoy the atmosphere and support his team with a lot of enthusiasm in order to get the important two points in the derby. There are already rumors behind the scenes that Kevin Wendlandt, who has been ill recently, might also be able to play.

The derby not only promises sporting entertainment, but also a lot of emotions and excitement. Fans of the handball scene in Varel and Aurich can look forward to an exciting evening that will certainly go down in the history of the two clubs.
