Basketball Löwen Braunschweig: Velička commits to Lithuania!
The transfer carousel continues to turn, and basketball fans in Braunschweig in particular have mixed feelings about the current developments. Arnas Velička, who drew attention last season as one of the key players for the Basketball Lions, has decided to take a new path. Like the Basketball Lions report, the talented guard signed a contract with Eurocup participant BC Neptūnas Klaipėda and will therefore no longer return to the Lions.
Last season, Velička was the Lions' fastest scoring player. With an average of 12.8 points per game and an incredible 5.5 assists, he was the leader on the court. In the playoffs he showed his class even more impressively and achieved an average of 17.2 points and 5.4 assists per game. His great talent and a remarkable three-point percentage of almost 40 percent attracted the attention of top clubs in Europe and ultimately led to his move to Lithuania.
A look back at Velička's career
Arnas Velička has had an interesting career that took him through different leagues and countries. Let's start with his beginnings: in 2015 he had a strong performance at the FIBA Europe Under-16 Championship and then signed with Žalgiris-2 Kaunas. After a good first year with a silver medal and an average of 4.7 points per game, he became a promising name in basketball. Wikipedia gives us an overview of his STAGES, and to date he has gone through numerous stations, including well-known clubs such as FC Barcelona B and Napoli Basket.
His path also led him to the Löwen Braunschweig, where he contributed significantly to the team's success and came to Braunschweig in the 2020/21 season. After a brief stint in the NBA Summer League with the Boston Celtics, he appeared again for the Lions in the BBL before moving to BC Neptūnas Klaipėda.
What does this change mean for the Lions?
The Basketball Lions are now looking for a new guard to fill the void left by Velička. Managing director Nils Mittmann expressed his thanks for the cooperation and wishes the player much success in Romania, where he is looking forward to the Eurocup next season.
Whether and how the Lions can compensate for this loss remains to be seen. With Velička's performance stats in mind - scoring in double figures 25 times and dishing out more than five assists 18 times - it's clear that it won't be an easy task. But the challenge also seems to be an incentive for the team, which undoubtedly has the potential to continue to play at the top of German basketball.
Stay tuned, because the transfer phase will certainly bring with it many surprises! International developments surrounding basketball clubs, such as those in the Eurocup, are also always of interest. Take a look Eurobasket to follow the latest rumors and transfers.
