Celle in winter season splendor: Discover the Christmas market!

Celle, a charming town in Lower Saxony, is attracting visitors not only with its colorful half-timbered houses and impressive castle, but also with the upcoming Christmas market, which takes place from November 24th to December 28th, 2025. But that's not all, because the traditional wine market, which takes place from July 22nd to 27th, also attracts many guests to the historic old town.

This city is the ideal destination for day trips, especially for residents of Braunschweig, who can get there in around 1.5 hours by train or in an hour by car via the B214. The old town, which is home to the densest half-timbered ensemble in the world, is famous for its unique houses, which have all kinds of ornaments and a very special charm. For those interested in history, there are public city tours where you can learn everything about the diverse histories and architecture of the half-timbered houses.

The Christmas market in Celle: A winter magic

The Celle Christmas market, which is considered one of the most beautiful in Northern Germany, is being celebrated this year under the motto “Celler Winter Magic”. The festive atmosphere is accompanied by the illumination on the castle forecourt and in the old town. Here you can smell the tempting scent of gingerbread and punch, while around 70 market stalls offer handicrafts and delicious food.

Visitors can look forward to a colorful program that also includes concerts and activities. The crafts that showcase their skills on site are particularly traditional, including glassblowers, silversmiths and doll carvers. The festive decorations invite you to stroll, look or simply linger in the decorated huts.

The castle: a place with history

The castle in Celle, which was the residence of the Guelph Dukes of Braunschweig-Lüneburg until 1705, is not only an architectural highlight, but also a cultural location. It houses the oldest, still-used Baroque theater in Europe and impresses with its castle chapel, which is considered an important example of Renaissance art. Regular tours of the castle – even on weekends – provide insights into the exciting history of this place.

The Celle half-timbered structure, with its crooked facades and windows of different sizes, tells stories from the past and makes the city appear alive. The oldest building, dated to 1526, can be found on “Am Heiligen Kreuz” street. If you want to follow in the footsteps of history, this is the right place for you.

In summer, the wine market delights visitors with regional delicacies, while the Christmas market fills the cold season with warmth and cosiness. In Celle there is always a reason to set off and enjoy the advantages of this fantastic city.
