Three people died in a tragic accident in the Mittelland Canal near Braunschweig
A tragic accident claimed the lives of three people last Saturday evening near Braunschweig. As Focus reports, a vehicle crashed over a bridge into the Mittelland Canal after a collision. The emergency services finally found the bodies of three male inmates in the water and recovered them using a special crane.
The accident occurred when the driver, presumably a 34-year-old Serb, hit several other vehicles due to excessive speed and risky overtaking maneuvers on the single-lane federal highway 4. His car went out of control, crashed through the bridge railing and ended up in the canal. Two other passengers, a 25-year-old and a 31-year-old Croatian, also died in the accident. Fortunately, two other passengers, a 47-year-old woman and a 53-year-old man from Hamburg, survived the accident but suffered serious injuries.
Rescue workers on duty
The alerted rescue workers were on site in no time. Firefighters and divers were deployed to free the seriously injured people from the wreckage, while the suspected accident vehicle was recovered from the canal. According to Traunsteiner Tagblatt, the emergency services worked under high pressure to rescue the injured and get the three dead out of the water.
The police are now investigating the driver of the accident car for negligent homicide after it emerged that the vehicle with a Munich license plate was considered embezzled after being rented. The driver had previously evaded a check on Autobahn 2, which added to the drama of the incident.
Causes and consequences of statistics
Statistics on traffic accidents like this play a crucial role in future road safety. According to Destatis, such figures not only serve to record accidents, but also to develop measures in legislation and road construction. These statistics provide a valuable basis for transport policy and help to analyze structures and dependencies between accident-related factors.
The investigation into this tragic incident is ongoing. It remains to be seen whether an autopsy of the dead will take place and what further information the authorities will gain. The statements of those involved, especially the drivers of the other vehicles involved, could also be crucial in clarifying the background.
