Insolvency shock in Braunschweig: traditional company FDBS is fighting for the future!
The economic situation is tough, and now it has also hit the traditional food wholesaler FDBS Fleischer-dienst Braunschweig eG. On November 13, 2025, the company filed for bankruptcy. For over 100 years, FDBS has successfully supplied restaurateurs, butcher shops and retailers in the Braunschweig region with a wide range of fresh foods such as meat, sausage, cheese as well as fruit and vegetables. However, current challenges, such as price pressure, consumer restraint and rising energy costs, have taken a toll on the company. The insolvency was confirmed by the Braunschweig District Court, and the provisional insolvency administrator Tobias Hartwig from the law firm Schultze & Braun has the task of examining the economic situation and developing options for restructuring, as News38 reports.
The good news: Despite the bankruptcy, deliveries to customers remain unrestricted and new orders are still being accepted. The approximately 100 employees can count on secure wages and salaries until the end of the year. FDBS offers over 15,000 items, from fresh meat to sausages to technical items. With an annual turnover of over 30 million euros, the company is in a strategically interesting position, although the economic conditions are challenging. The causes of insolvency are diverse: In addition to general consumer restraint, increased energy and material costs as well as changes in the market environment are crucial. The short-term cancellation of payment terms by one of the major partners has also led to liquidity bottlenecks, as Presseportal describes.
The challenges of bankruptcy
In Germany, insolvency is not a rare phenomenon. Around 17,814 corporate bankruptcies were recorded in 2023, which represents an increase compared to the previous year. In this country, small and medium-sized companies in particular are struggling with the difficult economic conditions. A large proportion of bankruptcies occur in the service sector, where 59 percent of companies are affected. This shows that even traditional companies like FDBS face enormous challenges despite their many years of market experience.
FDBS is all the more committed to a structured restart. The board, together with the insolvency administrator Hartwig, is planning a comprehensive restructuring concept that will include both structural and financial realignments. The company had already initiated projects to save energy and supply its own electricity in order to be prepared for the future. The aim is to position FDBS as a strong and sustainable partner for the region, even in these turbulent times.
In summary, while FDBS' bankruptcy represents a serious challenge, it could also provide an opportunity for a fresh start. It remains to be seen how the situation will develop and what measures will take effect. Given the economic conditions, the future direction of the company will be of great importance, not only for the employees, but for the entire region.
