Summer holidays in Lower Saxony: Germany ticket blocked for students!
While the summer holidays in Lower Saxony are just around the corner, many Braunschweig students have to come to terms with unpleasant news: the Germany ticket, which is available to them for buses and trains during the school year, will not be usable during the holidays. News38 reports that the ticket is blocked electronically and therefore shows the message “invalid” during checks.
What is particularly annoying is that this closure applies not only to the holidays, but also to the last two days of school, July 1st and 2nd. This means that students who rely on the D-Ticket cannot make their usual journeys. However, one ray of hope remains: exceptions apply within the Braunschweig Region Transport Association (VRB) and in neighboring cities and districts.
Alternatives for the summer months
In order to remain mobile even in the summer, students who are entitled to the Deutschlandticket have the option of purchasing the U21 leisure card for Lower Saxony as an alternative. This costs 25.50 euros and offers attractive conditions for journeys on local trains in Lower Saxony, Bremen and Hamburg.
The U21 leisure card is valid for trips from Monday to Friday from 2 p.m. as well as on Saturdays, Sundays and holiday days for 24 hours. A big advantage: During the entire holiday season, from July 3rd to August 13th, 2025, students can travel flexibly and without restrictions. The Niedersachsen-Tarif makes it possible for the U21 leisure card to be a great option for students who cannot use the D-Ticket during the summer holidays.
How do I get the Germany ticket?
The application for the Deutschlandticket must be made again for the 2024/2025 school year if you are still entitled to school transport. It is important that existing tickets are reactivated at the start of the new school year. Students should keep their chip card safe so that they are prepared for the start of school.
For uncomplicated ticket use, we recommend using the FahrPlaner app. This is available in both the App Store and Google Play and offers helpful information about all travel options. VSN also provides an explanatory graphic that shows step by step how to get from the form to the German ticket.
Not only Germany tickets, but also other tickets, such as Lower Saxony tickets or single tickets, can be purchased in the app. It also offers features such as departure and arrival times, trip changes and even the ability to set a customized commuter alarm.
For those traveling by bike: a cycling day pass is available for 6.50 euros, while folded folding bikes can be taken along for free. Good advice is to find out about all the options in good time so that you can make the most of your upcoming holidays in Lower Saxony.
