A37 construction site: More closures and delays until 2026!
Things are going haywire in Hanover! From June 23, 2023, there will be noticeable changes for drivers on the A37. In particular, the exit from the A37 to the A7 in the direction of Celle will then no longer be possible, while the exit from the A7 to the A37 in the direction of Celle will also be closed. This means a significant change for many road users, as traffic on the A37 towards Celle has only been in one lane since June 18, 2023. Hannoversche Allgemeine reports.
The construction site extends over the section between the Kirchhorst junction and the Beinhorn junction and is expected to last until 2026. That's quite a chunk, because the A37 has been a construction site for more than two years. The main reasons for the delays are extraordinary circumstances such as floods and suspected bombs. The comprehensive renovation of this important traffic artery not only includes the milling of all layers of the road, but also reuse of the material, which is not only cost-effective but also environmentally friendly.
Extensive renovation work
In detail, the new roadway is built in several layers: First, the sandy soil is cemented, followed by a 14 cm thick asphalt base layer, an 8 cm thick asphalt binder and finally a 4 cm thick asphalt surface layer. But that's not all: the protective barriers, sign gantries and markings will only be installed after the asphalt work has been completed, which makes it even more difficult for traffic to pass through. The total costs of this renovation amount to around 65 million euros. autobahn.de added.
The A37 is being completely renovated between the Hannover-Misburg and Beinhorn junctions and covers an approximately 10 kilometer long section that is divided into two construction phases. Construction phase 1 began in April 2023 and extends to the Hanover-Kirchhorst motorway junction. The existing traffic signal gantries will not only be renewed, but ten bridge structures will also receive urgently needed repair work. In addition, the drainage pipes in the median strip and partly in the side areas must be renovated to prevent future damage.
A look at the transport projects in Germany
However, the A37 is not the only project that is currently the focus of the transport authorities. A total of 144 transport projects with significant public interest are underway in Germany. Auto Motor and Sport informs about the efforts of the Federal Ministry of Transport to halve the planning times for new transport routes. Given the infrastructure perceived by many to be inadequate, this is a crucial step in addressing congestion and bottleneck problems.
A long-term outlook shows that we can expect freight transport performance to increase by 46 percent by 2051. It is therefore essential that transport projects such as the A37 upgrade get rolling and that we all have a good hand for it.
