Day of fasting and prayer: Take action for peace in the world!
On August 14, 2025, the eve of the Feast of the Ascension, the call comes Union Internationale des Supérieures Générales (UISG) all baptized Catholics to a day of fasting and prayer for peace in the world. The initiative comes at a time when regions such as Gaza, Sudan, Ukraine and Myanmar are affected by violent conflicts and deep crises. Women and children in particular bear the greatest burden of conflict in these areas.
As part of this global movement, all believers are encouraged to raise their voices and take action - be it through prayer, direct words or concrete actions. “Peace is built together,” is the UISG credo. On August 14th, not only those who belong to the faith are invited, but also everyone who feels addressed.
Pray and act together
Specifically, the UISG proposes three gestures to celebrate this day: First, common prayer and meditation on the Word of God, linked to the current conflicts. Secondly, it calls for encouraging the authorities to work for peace and human dignity. Thirdly, solidarity help is offered to support those affected through reception and support networks.
The day is also intended to reflect on topics such as justice, reconciliation and hope for all peoples. The prayers are particularly addressed to women and children affected by conflict, migrants and all those who live in fear. The call for solidarity is also accompanied by a fast to be a voice for the voiceless.
Peace as a goal
Given the current conflicts in the Middle East, particularly in Israel, Gaza, the West Bank and beyond, this day is of great importance. The challenges of violence and war are omnipresent, and for many, access to basic needs becomes a daily challenge. The text of the prayers emphasizes not only the need for prayer, but also the responsibility to help others and live the message of charity.
“Let us think of the people who are fleeing, seeking protection or are being robbed of their home and future by violence,” are the appeals of the religious communities. The day is not only a call for prayer, but also for people to actively combat the suffering of people in crisis areas and to advocate for peace.
As the world pauses and turns to God in prayer on August 14th, UISG reminds us of the power of community in faith: “Together we can raise our voices for peace and together we can hopefully bring about positive change.” A strong signal that appeals to the unity and faith with which peace work can be carried out.
