Chaos on northern Germany's highways: closures until Monday morning!

Last weekend brought some challenges for drivers in northern Germany. As NDR reports, numerous highways were closed, which led to delays and frustration in many places. The A7 and A23 in Schleswig-Holstein and the A1 and A261 in Lower Saxony were particularly affected. While the A7 between Stellingen and Heimfeld was closed in Hamburg, there were also restrictions in the Elbe tunnel. This closure lasted until 5 a.m. Monday morning. Drivers who got into the traffic jam between Quickborn and Kaltenkirchen from the direction of Quickborn didn't have it easy.

But the A7 doesn't stay quiet for long. Construction work will begin on Monday in the direction of Flensburg, between Schnelsen-Nord and Henstedt-Ulzburg, which could further impact traffic. The access roads at the Buchholzer triangle from the A1 to the A261 from Bremen and Lübeck are also affected until Monday morning at 5 a.m., as a surface layer renovation is also being carried out here.

Construction sites and traffic

Particular attention is also being paid to the A1 in Lower Saxony, where there is a complete closure between Vechta and Cloppenburg until 5 a.m. on Monday. Here, drivers have to do without four bridges from the 1960s that will be demolished, while new bridges are to be built in the coming months. For many commuters, this means additional detours and travel time. Another full closure of the A1 will be announced as early as spring 2026, so drivers will have to prepare for ongoing construction work.

The A23 near Pinneberg in the direction of Heide will remain closed between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. on the nights of November 10th and 11th and 12th. According to NDR, traffic will be routed through Pinneberg and back onto the motorway at the Pinneberg-Nord exit. The reason for this closure is dismantling work on construction site facilities and partition walls. However, drivers can be happy: From Wednesday there should be free travel again between Hamburg and the North Sea.

For anyone planning to head into the weekend, it is advisable to check the construction sites and closures in advance. Anyone who prepares for the trip and seeks understanding for the temporary restrictions is certainly doing good business in order to avoid unnecessary stress on the roads.
