Severe storm in Oldenburger Münsterland: trees fall, roads blocked!

There is a threat of severe storms in Oldenburger Münsterland today, July 2, 2025, which could affect the region until Thursday night. The German Weather Service (DWD) has been warning about these extreme weather conditions since Wednesday morning. The warning, which was issued specifically for the Cloppenburg district at 7 p.m., includes violent thunderstorms, stormy gusts and heavy rain.

On Wednesday evening the prediction seemed to come true: fallen trees were reported in Löningen and Molbergen, which caused some blockages on the roads. Federal Highway 68 between Cloppenburg and Osnabrück is particularly affected, where drivers have been warned of aquaplaning. In order to be able to respond to the impending dangers, the Oldenburg control center increased its staff and the Goldenstedt fire department became active to clear the affected streets.

Storm warnings and their consequences

The Cloppenburg/Vechta police station advises citizens not to be outdoors during thunderstorms. Lightning strikes are an additional cause for concern. In Vechta, the fire brigade reported an alarm after lightning struck in the area without hitting any buildings. During the evening there were several calls due to fallen trees and water damage.

With wind speeds between 70 and 105 km/h, the strength of the squalls should not be underestimated. The fully leafy trees and heavy branches that fell due to the wind now pose an additional danger. According to the DWD, further thunderstorms are expected until late at night, with the weather situation expected to calm down around 4 or 5 a.m.

Outlook on weather developments

The DWD forecasts that the weather situation, which will last until Friday, July 4th, will remain unstable. Strong thunderstorms with heavy rain, hail and squalls are expected in southeast Germany. There could be further storms on Saturday, especially on the edge of the Alps. Viewers can also expect unpleasant weather on Monday, when gale force winds and strong thunderstorms could be on the agenda again.

It is important to keep an eye on the warnings from the DWD and the information from weather services such as Weatherdienst and Wetteronline in order to adequately prepare for the possible dangers. Information about the various warnings and their meanings is easily accessible via these services in order to best adapt to the current situation. Stay safe and informed!
