Special paint for CH-53: 53 years of the Bundeswehr celebrated in Diepholz!

To mark the 53rd anniversary of the CH-53 in the Bundeswehr, a very special Luftwaffe helicopter was given an impressive special paint job. The detached maintenance squadron of Helicopter Squadron 64 in Diepholz really worked hard. The team of eight members, including an experienced aircraft painter, carried out this painting by hand in the squadron's aircraft paint shop. “A livery with history – 53 years of the CH-53!” the Air Force proudly headlines on its Instagram channel, and the effort was worth it.

The paint itself is a true work of art: it combines a Bundeswehr-style polygon pattern with an impressive transition from NATO olive to air superiority gray. In addition, coats of arms of former associations and the squadron crest adorn the design. The painters needed around 60 kilograms of paint to complete the project. The entire process, from the initial idea to the initial roll-out, took six months. The first flight of the unique helicopter with the registration number 84+70 took place from Diepholz to Laupheim.

The CH-53: A long story

The Bundeswehr's CH-53 fleet looks back on a long and diverse history. On December 1, 1971, a total of 112 Sikorsky CH-53G transport helicopters entered service. Flight operations began with the handover of the first aircraft on July 26, 1972. In the years between 1973 and 1974, the three medium transport helicopter regiments each received 32 helicopters. Flight operations have been further optimized over the years through numerous modifications. There are 60 CH-53s in service today, predominantly in the CH-53GA version, which is the result of a comprehensive modernization program that has extended the service life from 6,000 to 10,000 flight hours.

This modernization should not be underestimated: the different variants, including CH-53G, GS, GE and GA, each have their own features. Of particular note are the CH-53GS, upgraded with robust Kevlar armor, and the CH-53GE, with updated communications and navigation systems. With the upgrade to the CH-53GA, new digital cockpits, FLIR night vision systems and an autopilot were integrated. The Air Force also plans to gradually replace the CH-53 fleet with the successor model Boeing CH-47 Chinook by 2030.

Modern challenges and adaptations

The last few years have been marked by a comprehensive modernization of the Sikorsky CH-53 fleet. After the structural reform of the Bundeswehr in 2011, the Air Force took over the tactical air transport role from the army aviation. This resulted in the Bell UH-1Ds and NH90 transport helicopters being transferred to the Army Aviation. In return, the Air Force took control of the CH-53s, which lasted until 2013. As part of these adjustments, around 20 CH-53s will in future be operated at Holzdorf Air Base, which plays an important role for the Air Force's air transport squadrons.

The CH-53 itself is an impressive device in a conventional half-shell construction made of aluminum alloys, reinforced with steel in particularly stressed areas. Its cargo area measures 9.15 meters long and is 2.29 meters wide and 1.98 meters high. It offers a maximum lifting capacity of 9,000 kg, which makes it particularly versatile. A clearly structured cockpit, numerous display instruments and hydropneumatic systems underline the modernity of this technical masterpiece.

With an eye to the future and the gradual transition to modernized operational models, the Air Force remains ambitious. The combination of experience, modern technology and a strong history will undoubtedly continue to make a decisive contribution to the security and operational capability of the Bundeswehr.
